Your Second Outlet Could Be Eating Your Profits

Your Second Outlet Could Be Eating Your Profits without text

Opening a second outlet is usually celebrated as a sign that the business is growing.

But revenue growth across outlets can hide a very different story.

Consider this:

Outlet 1: ₹40 lakh sales | 12% margin
Outlet 2: ₹25 lakh sales | 2% margin

Together, the business is doing ₹65 lakh in sales.

The headline says “growth.”

The numbers say: look closer.

Every outlet has its own economics

A profitable first outlet does not automatically make the second one profitable.

The new location may have higher rent.
Labour costs may be different.
Food wastage may be higher.
Procurement may be less efficient.
Delivery commissions may be eating into margins.

Even pricing, customer mix and order volumes can vary significantly between locations.

Which means consolidated financial statements can sometimes hide the problem.

The business may look healthy overall while one outlet quietly consumes the profits generated by another.

    Expansion needs an outlet-level P&L

Before opening another location, promoters need to understand more than expected sales.

    They need to model:

Revenue → Food Cost → Labour → Rent → Other Operating Costs → Outlet Profit

And once the outlet is operational, those numbers need to be tracked regularly.

    Because the real question isn’t:

“Can we afford to open another outlet?”

    It is:

“Will this outlet generate an acceptable return on the capital we put into it?”

That distinction becomes increasingly important as a restaurant business moves from one outlet to five, ten or twenty.

Growth should compound profits—not just sales

Expansion is not successful simply because the topline gets bigger.

Each new outlet should strengthen the economics of the overall business.

That requires visibility into outlet-level profitability, food costs, wastage, labour efficiency, procurement, working capital and delivery economics.
